Vijayakanth, the former actor and politician from Tamil Nadu, has passed away.

On Thursday morning, Vijayakanth, the leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party in Tamil Nadu, passed away at the age of 71 after battling COVID-19 and experiencing respiratory difficulties, as reported by the DMDK's official X (formerly Twitter) account.

His final rites are scheduled to take place tomorrow evening at the party's headquarters in Chennai. Vijayakanth, a former actor affectionately known as 'Captain' due to the success of his 1991 film "Captain Prabhakaran," where he played the lead role, founded the DMDK in 2005 and emerged as the sole winning candidate in the 2006 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election.

Although the party secured 10% of the vote in the 2009 Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu, it experienced a decline starting in the early 2010s. Leaders from both regional and national levels expressed their condolences for Vijayakanth's demise on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin, mourning the loss of "Captain" Vijayakanth, stated, “His passing is a significant loss to Tamil Nadu and the world of cinema.” He further announced that Vijayakanth's final journey would be accorded full state honors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sorrow over Vijayakanth's death, recognizing him as a legend of the Tamil film industry whose charismatic performances touched the hearts of millions. Modi highlighted Vijayakanth's deep commitment to public service, acknowledging his lasting impact on the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
