Gaston Glock, the creator of the widely used handgun, has passed away at the age of 94.
Gaston Glock, the Austrian engineer credited with inventing the Glock handgun, has passed away at the age of 94.
In a statement, the Glock company expressed that the founder's legacy would live on in the continued pursuit of his life's work. The Glock firearm, widely utilized by armed forces, security personnel, gun owners, and even criminals globally, gained significant popularity through appearances in Hollywood blockbusters like The Matrix Reloaded.
Despite the widespread use of his creation, Glock was known as a private billionaire, often residing at a lakeside estate in Austria. His public presence was limited, with notable instances including the release of a book about his business in 2012, a divorce from his first wife in 2011, and an incident in the late 1990s when a business associate attempted to have him killed.
In the latter episode, Glock, then 70, fought off the hired attacker, a professional wrestler who assaulted him with a rubber mallet. Glock's leadership in charting the strategic direction of the Glock Group and establishing the brand as a global leader in the handgun industry was highlighted in the company's statement.
Born in 1929, Glock studied mechanical engineering in Vienna and later founded a consumer goods business. In the early 1980s, the business expanded into military supplies, leading to the design and patenting of the lightweight 9-millimetre semiautomatic handgun that became globally renowned.
The Glock handgun received acclaim in both military and police circles and became an iconic element in American pop culture. Despite controversies surrounding its easy concealability and high ammunition capacity, Glock's influence in the firearms industry remained significant.
Gaston Glock leaves behind a legacy that transformed the world of small arms, and he is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two sons.
